The Beatles - The Beatles (The White Album): Anniversary EditionThe Beatles - The Beatles (The White Album): Anniversary EditionThe Beatles - The Beatles (The White Album): Anniversary Edition - Capitol
In November 1968, millions of double LPs were shipped to record stores worldwide ahead of that tumultuous year’s most anticipated music event: the November 22nd release of The Beatles (soon to be better known as ‘The White Album’). With their ninth studio album, The Beatles took the world on a whole new trip, side one blasting off with the exhilarating rush of a screaming jet escorting Paul McCartney’s punchy, exuberant vocals on “Back In The U.S.S.R.” “Dear Prudence” came next, John Lennon warmly beckoning his friend and all of us to “look around.” George Harrison imparted timeless wisdom in “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” singing, “With every mistake we must surely be learning.” Ringo Starr’s “Don’t Pass Me By” marked his first solo songwriting credit on a Beatles album. For 50 years, ‘The White Album’ has invited its listeners to venture forth and explore the breadth and ambition of its music, delighting and inspiring each new generation in turn. This week, The Beatles release a suite of lavishly presented ‘White Album’ packages (Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe). The album’s 30 tracks are newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and mix engineer Sam Okell in stereo and 5.1 surround audio, joined by 27 early acoustic demos and 50 session takes, most of which are previously unreleased in any form.

J Mascis - Elastic Days

J Mascis - Elastic DaysJ Mascis - Elastic DaysJ Mascis - Elastic Days - Sub Pop
Near the end of Reagan's first term, the Western Massachusetts Hardcore scene coughed up an insanely shaped chunk called Dinosaur. Comprised of WMHC vets, the trio was a miasmic tornado of guitar noise, bad attitude and near-subliminal pop-based-shape-shifting. Through their existence, Dinosaur (amended to Dinosaur Jr. for legal reasons) defined a very specific, very aggressive set of oblique song-based responses to what was going on. Their one constant was the scalp-fryingly loud guitar and deeply buried vocals of J Mascis. A couple of years before they ended their reign, J cut a solo album called Martin + Me. Recorded live and acoustic, the record allowed the bones of J's songs to be totally visible for the first time. Fans were surprised to hear how melodically elegant these compositions were, even if J still seemed interested in swallowing some of the words that most folks would have sung. Since then, through the reformation of the original Dinosaur Jr lineup in 2005, J has recorded solo albums now and then. And those album, Sings + Chant for AMMA (2005), Several Shades of Why (2011) and Tied to a Star (2014) had all delivered incredible sets of songs presented with a minimum of bombast and a surfeit of cool. Like its predecessors, Elastic Days was recorded at J's own Bisquiteen studio. Mascis does almost all his own stunts, although Ken Miauri (who also appeared on Tied to a Star) plays keyboards and there are a few guest vocal spots. These include old mates Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), and Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion, etc.), as well as the newly added voice of Zoë Randell (Luluc) among others. But the show is mostly J's and J's alone. --Byron Coley

Sarah Brightman - Hymn

Sarah Brightman - HymnSarah Brightman - HymnSarah Brightman - Hymn - Decca
Sarah Brightman returns with her new studio album, Hymn, reuniting with long time producer and collaborator Frank Peterson, with whom she created chart topping albums such as Timeless (Time To Say Goodbye), Eden, La Luna, Harem, Symphony, and A Winter Symphony. HYMN is an inspirational collection of orchestrated, choir-based songs. Brightman, kept thinking about the word, HYMN, and to her it suggested joy a feeling of hope and light, something that is familiar and secure. For Brightman, every project comes from an emotional place, and HYMN is no exception. HYMN was recorded over the past two years in Hamburg, Miami, London, Vancouver, Los Angeles, New York, and Budapest, and encompasses songs by such modern composers as Eric Whitacre (Fly To Paradise), Japanese superstar musician and songwriter Yoshiki (Miracle), and German DJ Paul Kalkbrenner (Sky and Sand). HYMN's mystical, uplifting tone is set with its title track a song by British prog-rock band Barclay James Harvest. From there, the album becomes excitingly eclectic, encompassing many styles. Sogni, described as a mash-up of two arias from two different operas by French composer Georges Bizet, is flawlessly sung by Brightman and French tenor Vincent Niclo. Also included are Canto Per Noi, written by famed Italian composer Ennio Morricone and Romano Musumarra, and Follow Me, the love theme from the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty. Finally, the album closes with a new rendition of Brightman s signature smash duet with Andrea Bocelli, Time To Say Goodbye, in a new solo rendition with lyrics Sarah wrote herself, and sung in English for the first time.

New Release Round-Up 11-02-18

New Releases 02 November 2018

Tenacious D - Post-Apocalypto - Sony
Post-Apocalypto is the new album from acclaimed rock duo and basically everyone’s favorite band ever, Tenacious D -- comprised of Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The album is the companion to the band’s visual project Post-Apocalypto – The Series, an original, six-part animated video series from the minds of Tenacious D. Each frame of every episode was hand-drawn by Jack himself, with every character voiced by Black and Gass. The series began rolling out on September 28th, 2018, via Tenacious D’s YouTube page, with a new episode every Friday after. True to the title, Post-Apocalypto – The Series finds Tenacious D thrust into a world of complete and utter destruction following the drop of an atomic bomb. Surviving the attack in class cinematic fashion (a good old imperishable 1950’s refrigerator), the duo quickly learns that new forms of evil have spawned from the blast.  One thing becomes apparent -- for humanity to prevail, Tenacious D must save the world.

Metallica - ...And Justice For All: Remastered - Blackened Recordings
Remastered edition of ...And Justice For All: Remastered.  Remastered by Reuben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering, Los Angeles, CA. Available on CD, 3CD, 2LP and Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set.

The Prodigy - No Tourists - BMG
The original electronic music trailblazers -The Prodigy- are back with some of their fiercest ever tunes. ‘No Tourists’, has been written, produced and mixed over the last year by Liam Howlett in his studio in London’s Kings Cross. Though this is – Liam notes – “very much a band album”. Maxim and Keef Flint are very much present and correct, each supplying their legendary vocal skills on this, the Essex machine’s seventh studio record. Yes, there are one or two collaborators, but fundamentally this is the sound of the central Prodigy three, bringing their riotous sound to audiences old and new, two decades since they changed the face and sound of electronic music with epochal album ‘The Fat Of The Land’. Expanding on the general shape of the project, Liam says: “this album is equally aggressive as the last records – but in a different way." A musician, songwriter and studio maestro, Howlett is as rigorous and righteously Up For It as he was when he formed his 28-years-young band. He explains that, as ever, the new songs “are built to play live. That’s the one thing that brings everything together. I couldn’t write this music unless it has that outlet on stage. That helps write the music. This is what I do it for: the live thing. And until we feel like we can’t do it, or the buzz goes, we won’t stop." It’s that sense of do-or-die commitment that is reflected in the album title. “To us, ‘No Tourists’ is ultimately about escapism and the want and need to be derailed. Don’t be a tourist - there is always more danger and excitement to be found if you stray from the set path.”

Opeth - Garden of the Titans (Opeth Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre) - Nuclear Blast America
Since the early 90s Sweden’s Opeth have stretched the boundaries of heavy music. From the progressive death metal the band began with on classics like “Orchid” and “My Arms, Your Hearse” to the records like “Blackwater Park” and the band’s recent record, 2016’s “Sorceress”, Opeth has continually invited their growing audience along with them as they grew into the musically respected band they are today. Filmed and recorded in 2017 at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside of Denver, “Garden of the Titans (Opeth Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre)” is a 2-CD/BLU-RAY + DVD release (along with several vinyl color formats) consisting of tracks spanning the band’s nearly 30 year career.

Rodney Crowell - Christmas Everywhere

Rodney Crowell - Christmas EverywhereRodney Crowell - Christmas EverywhereRodney Crowell - Christmas Everywhere - New West Records
My childhood memories of Christmas aren't warm and fuzzy. The holidays were more of a nuisance for my parents than cause for celebration. This is not to say that on behalf of their only child they didn't give the season a halfhearted try. There were Christmases when I found under the tree an electric football set, a Daisy pump air-rifle and a basketball goal that never got nailed up. But, there were also mornings when apples, oranges, hickory nuts and a hammer signified that year's bounty. Which is to say that Christmas in our household was mostly a wait-and-see proposition. I was finally ready to record an album of original Christmas songs. With Dan Knobler producing and some very gifted musicians and vocalists lending their talents, the making of the album Christmas Everywhere ranks as some of the most enjoyable recording sessions I've ever experienced. The record was close to being finished when it occurred to me that to set the tone for the albums mostly irreverent subtext, I needed to compose a lyrical prelude. In honor of Clement Moore, who wrote the poem we all know as, 'The Night Before Christmas,' I came up with a short piece called 'Clement's Lament (We'll See You in The Mall)'. Tania Hancheroff and Kim Keyes stopped by the studio and performed the tune with Jordan Lehning's orchestral backing and the album was pronounced complete. Seasons Cheer, Rodney Crowell

Haley In-store Performance & Signing

Electric Fetus - Minneapolis

Friday, October 12th - 7:00 p.m.

The Electric Fetus is excited to welcome Haley back to the store for a free performance on Friday, October 12th at 7:00 p.m. Following her set, Haley will sign copies of her forthcoming CD/LP Pleasureland. Pleasureland won't be released until October 26th, but fans may buy it at the event.

More info on PleasurelandHarkening back to her 2011 release Golder, which featured two instrumental tracks, with Pleasureland Haley has taken the instrumental concept a few steps further. Transitioning from the erratic, synth-driven intro of "Credit Forever Part 1" into the deeply enchanting "Give Yourself Away", which blends piano melodies in the style of French Romanticism with the production stylings of Brian Eno to build a sonic landscape which is as lovely as it is uneasy. In the stoner-metal burner "Syrup", Haley’s lead guitar swaggers lazily over a fuzzed out, intense layer of distortion, featuring long-time collaborator and guitar wunderkind Jeremy Ylvisaker and Low's Steve Garrington on bass. The intimate and devastating "Pig Latin" showcases Haley’s extraordinary gift for melody, carried by world class saxophonist Mike Lewis (Happy AppleBon Iver), tracked live in Haley's bedroom.

Sparsely interlacing the organic and digital, Pleasureland moves through the gamut of grief, perception, and empowerment, eliciting both the uneasiness of a world shifting unexpectedly as well as the innate capacity for goodness and beauty. Here, Haley displays her longtime mastery of simple and haunting melodies that remain with the listener long after, replacing explanation through words with a pallet of sonic exploration wrapped up into just twenty-seven minutes.

Although the concepts for Pleasureland could be construed as cagey, the nature of this album is, at heart, for the listener’s pleasure alone. If you are expecting the dark pop-rock sounds which have defined Haley’s music thus far, you will not necessarily find them here- what you will find, however, is an album that swells with powerful emotion and raw beauty, holding space for those without a voice while simultaneously creating a voice of its own. Pleasureland displays another side of a unique artist resisting the familiar aspects of success by redefining it for herself.

This event is free and open to all ages.

Thank You!!

Thank you from The Electric Fetus...

"A special thank you to our amazing community, customers, industry partners and current and former employees for 50 years of love and support. We wouldn't have been able to do it without everyone's dedication and hard work! A thank you seems inadequate. We are profoundly humbled. Here's to another 50+ years!!" -- The Electric Fetus

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our in-store events, including The Hang Ups, Bobby Z, Andrea Swensson, Slug, Plain Ole BillReneé Austin and her band, Nomothetic and The Carnegies. Special shoutout to our sound man Joe Holland and the staff DJs who curated some fun sets for us on Sunday. Saturday night's party at First Avenue was a blast. We're grateful to First Avenue & the 7th St. Entry and 89.3 The Current for hosting such a fun night. Thank you to Phantom Tails for welcoming the Electric Fetus All-stars to the stage in the 7th St. Entry after their release party.

We also send our gratitude to Kristi Abbott, Wax Off DesignCat Eye Design and Brickmania for their creative contributions to our big anniversary. And One Simple Plan, thank you for getting our story out there...the last 10 years with you have rocked.

Last, but never least, a massive thanks to the wonderful customers who made us what we are the last 50 years. Without you, there is no Electric Fetus or thriving music community in Minnesota. All the extra effort made to visit us during this challenging road construction season means everything to us. We're not sure what the next 50 years will bring, but we're all in it together!

Web Orders Update

Our web department is working hard to process hundreds of orders right now. Please understand that we are a small department that can't be there 24-7.

Prince - Nothing Compares 2 U purple 7" single:

We started shipping those orders on May 1st. Tracking numbers are being emailed, but we are finding that several of our emails are bouncing back due to a blocking issue with our internet service provider. If you received confirmation of a 5-digit or 6-digit order number and you didn't make multiple orders, you will receive that order. We are getting to order inquiries at websales@electricfetus.com, but keep in mind our bounceback issue. Inquiries made in private Facebook messages are also addressed. https://www.facebook.com/ElectricFetusMPLS/ It's important to note your order number. If you ordered more than one copy, your order will be cut to one copy and partial refunds will be made to those who payed via PayPal. Dealing with the people who have tried to order multiple copies has taken time away from filling orders.

While all this is going on, we are also filling current orders for other merchandise. We do appreciate your patience as we strive for excellent customer service!

Thank you,

The Electric Fetus Web Department

More about the story:
When Brooklyn record store owner Rob finds himself unexpectedly dumped, his life takes a music-filled turn toward the introspective. Based on the popular novel by Nick Hornby, High Fidelity follows Rob as he struggles to discover how his relationship went awry, and strives to change his life in order to win back his sweetheart Laura. With memorable characters and a rock-and-roll score, this homage to music geek culture explores love, heartbreak, and the power of the perfect soundtrack.

Dan Israel In-store Performance & Signing

Electric Fetus - Minneapolis

Wednesday, May 2nd - 7:00 p.m.

On Wednesday, May 2nd at 7:00 p.m., Dan Israel and his band will be here to celebrate his new release, You're Free. Following his set, Dan will sign copies of his new CD.

The album, Israel’s fourteenth studio creation, was produced during a transitional period for the Twin Cities native. After twenty-one years on the job, Israel left his editorial position at the nonpartisan Revisor’s Office of the Minnesota State Legislature. This leap of faith has let Israel—for the first time in his adult life—concentrate chiefly on his music, and in addition to writing and recording, he’s been pursuing an active performing schedule, playing his own material as a solo act and bandleader, and putting together sets in tribute to some of his formative influences, including Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. He’s also using this time to find new ways to treat and cope with lifelong struggles with depression and anxiety.

This event is free and open to all ages.

Sharon L. Nelson signing for the John L. Nelson Project release

Sharon L. Nelson signing for the John L. Nelson Project release

Electric Fetus - Minneapolis

Sunday, April 22nd - 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

On Sunday, April 22nd, we'll welcome Sharon L. Nelson to the store for a CD signing. Sharon will sign copies of the John L. Nelson Project release Don't Play With Love.

More info on this release from ropeadope.com:

It is with distinct pleasure that we announce the release of The John L. Nelson Project - Don't Play With Love. The long anticipated album was in discussion between Nelson and his eldest daughter Sharon many years ago, before Prince Rogers Nelson changed the world of music. Shelved as John L. Nelson frequently collaborated with Prince, the project re-appeared in serendipitous fashion: the sheet music falling out of a cabinet as Sharon Nelson was organizing (yes, just like the movie). Sharon brought the great Louis Hayes (Prince's cousin) to Paisley Park with his seasoned band - including Richard Germanson, Dezron Douglas, Vincent Herring, and Jeremy Pelt - and they laid down seven tracks live.

The intense history paints the picture, yet the players and the melodies let the music jump right off the canvas. Don't Play With Love is a journey from the past to the present - we get the sense of an earlier time yet we feel all of the human emotion that rings true for eternity.

Our dad was a loving, caring, hardworking father and a prolific jazz musician most notably known as the father of the musical genius, our brother Prince. Our dad wrote and composed many songs, but they were never recorded until now. He was Prince’s musical inspiration, and this project is very special because it was recorded in Paisley Park and guided by the spirits of my father and brother Prince.  (Sharon L. Nelson)

This event is free and open to all ages.
